Updated: It was a productive weekend, sort of

The sewing bug bit me pretty hard this weekend, so I spent most of my "free" time cutting pattern pieces, ironing fabric, and sewing, sewing, sewing.

On Saturday I took Stasa with me to JoAnn's to pick out new fabrics and dress patterns. Plus I needed to pick up some notions, like thread, zippers, bobbins, etc. Only I didn't get thread because I thought I had enough pink and blue thread for what I was going to make. Wrong.

Stasa was a lot of fun in the store. She picked out two fun dress patterns and then picked out the fabrics she liked. We ended up with 10 different fabrics and two dress patterns. She actually did a fairly decent job picking out coordinating fabrics, though one of the dresses will have four different fabrics, so we'll see how that one turns out.

I ended up making three dresses (and slimming one I made a few weeks ago) and had enough leftover fabric to make two skirts for Lexi.

Dress one: McCall's 4817
M4817

This one is the top left pattern with an extra flounce on the bottom. I cut the skirt part for the 2T length, so imagine how long it would have been as a 4T. I'll be making the dress shown on the little girl, but in the four crazy fabrics Stasa picked out. This dress was pretty easy to make - I started and finished it during the girl's nap on Sunday. I wish I had bought cute little cupcake buttons for it, but instead I dug in my button bin and used two light brown ones.

Dress two: Simplicity 2269

This dress was a bit more involved since it has gathered sleeves and a detailed yoke. It took me all night on Saturday to finish this dress. I cut a size 4T since Stasa is between sizes right now and the 4T is a bit roomy on her, but at least it's something she can grow into. I love the fabrics she chose for this dress. I made another one (not shown below) in a similar blue fabric that the girl on the pattern envelope is wearing, but I need a white zipper to finish it. The pattern doesn't call for a zipper, just two buttons, but I changed it up a bit for the blue fabric. Here's Stasa modeling the green version this morning:

It would probably be cuter if it was a bit shorter, so I might raise the hem a bit, but do it so I can let it out as she grows. We'll see. I might wind up being too lazy to do anything.

And here are Lexi's two skirts made from the scraps of Stasa's dress fabrics. I didn't use a pattern for these, just a super quick rectangle gathered at the waist by encased elastic. Both skirts took me about 15-20 minutes each. Super fast and easy to make. I've made Stasa a few of these skirts before, always with whatever leftover fabric I have laying around.

I have two dressed left to sew and I'll post pictures of those once they're finished. I'll try to remember to take a picture of the other dress I made a few weeks ago. It's super cute with a very full skirt. Here's the pattern for that dress (Simplicity 2466). I made it out of some fun neonish animal and graphic print fabric that Aunt Peggy gave me. Stasa loves it, so I'm sure it'll be the next thing she wears.

Shapes

The other week I decided to get a little crafty and make Stasa a shape toy out of leftover felt, velcro, and cardboard. She loves it and is really good at matching up the shapes, although she also loves to put the shape in the wrong spot, look up, and say nooooooooooo! before putting it in the right spot. She's such a tease.

Look how long her hair is getting - we have to keep it tied back otherwise she'll spend the majority of the day pushing it out of her eyes and getting all sorts of things in her hair.

Things I'm tempted to make

Every now and then I come across some really adorable little girl's clothes, but I never buy them because I refuse to spend more than $2 or $3 on a single item of clothing for Stasa. BUT I should try to figure out the pattern and make my own adorable clothes for her.

Here a few things I've found recently that I just love.

More projects!

I've been busy working on a couple of projects lately. I LOVE my sewing machine and now I'm researching embroidery machines, too.

Here's the summer sleep sack that I made for Stasa out of muslin. It's kind of like a straight jacket for babies.

And here's my prototype for Stasa's christening gown. I'll make the real one out of my wedding dress and will use pearl buttons. What do you think? Pretty cute, right?

Embellishments

I added 2 crocheted flowers and buttons to the baby beanie I made to girly it up. What do you think? Cute? I'm going to try to make a couple more hats before I go back to work.

Baby beanie

Here's my third attempt at a baby beanie. I think I finally got the stitch and size right. If you're interested in making one for yourself, here's the link. What do you think?

Another project

I never posted a picture of the other dress I made because I was going to wait and post a picture of Stasa actually wearing the dress. Well, by the time we got her dressed and ready, we had to leave and I don't think it's appropriate to take pictures at a memorial service. So, we missed out on getting a picture of her.
Soooooooooo, without further ado, here's the dress and the onesie and BabyLegs that she wore with it. She looked damn cute, too.

Dancing queen

I made Stasa a tutu last night and she tried it on this morning. I think she's a fan of it, what do you think? I'm going to make her another one out of cream colored tulle.

Look at this ham

She's been experimenting with sticking her tongue out. If I stick mine out at her, she tries to stick hers out. It's so stinkin' cute.

A new dress

This was probably the easiest piece of clothing I've ever made. Okay, maybe not the easiest - the BabyLegs were the easiest. But this is a close second. I bought a simple dress pattern the other day to make Stasa some fun summer dresses since I have tons of fabric just sitting around. Now that this one turned out well, I'll be making a lot more.

PS - Stasa is down for the night. Want to take bets on when she wakes up? I need her to be well rested for tomorrow since we have a play date with 4 other moms and babies!

UPDATE: If you guessed 10:00 PM, you were right! It's now 10:18 PM and poor Tom is up there trying his best to calm her. I guess I better go see if he wants some help. Keep those fingers crossed that we can get her back down.

BabyLegs

These are BabyLegs. They are $9.99 a pair at most stores. I love them because they make diaper changes easy - no pants to remove. I don't like paying $9.99 for them. Today I got a brilliant idea (if I do say so myself). I'll make my own BabyLegs! I bought a few pairs of adult knee socks in fun patterns and colors. All I have to do is chop off the foot and hem them. Voila! Homemade BabyLegs. I'll post pictures after they're finished.

UPDATE: Here's my first finished pair. They were super easy to make. I used a pair of baby socks for the ankle ribbing. What do you think? Cute, right?
