Out of the mouths of babes

Both of the girls are such chatterboxes - really each in their own way. Stasa picks up more and more phrases every day and uses them correctly. Today I asked her to do something and she responded with "are you kidding me?!" I couldn't not laugh. I mean, seriously?! LOL I guess I need to be careful about what I say, even if it's not technically a bad word.

On our way home today, she rummaged around in her purse, pulled out her sunglasses, and popped them on her face. Tom said she looked cool and she told him "no, I'm beautiful." Then proceeded to inform us that Lexi's beautiful, Mommy's a big girl, and daddy's not beautiful, he's a boy.

OH and we were informed tonight that she has a brother. We explained what a brother was and that she has a sister, not a brother (and no, I'm not pregnant, thankyouverymuch). She scoffed at us and kind of condescended that she would just buy one from the store. Easy peasy in her mind.

And that other kid, man, she's been trying her hardest to get her point across. She's got a small handful of useful words, all said the Lexi way: nigh' nigh', mama, dada, her version of Stasa, uh oh (such a favorite of ours especially when it's accompanied with food being thrown on the floor), and her version of line up. Yeah, the last one seems a little strange for a tiny tot to be saying, but it's something we sing every time we're ready to take the kids downstairs and when we're ready to leave the house. It's kind of our way to get them both in the same place and the song is actually from Bubble Guppies

More conversations with Stasa

First, I wanted to share some of my favorite Stasaisms:
Bernie = Ernie of Bert and Ernie fame
Krabby krabby = Krabby Patty from SpongeBob
Bob-Bob = SpongeBob Squarepants

********************************************************************************
Stasa: I want a cupcake!
Me: I want a million dollars.
Stasa: No million dollars. Just a cupcake.
Me: But if we had a million dollars we could buy a million cupcakes.
Stasa: I don't want a million dollars and million cupcakes. I want a white cupcake.

********************************************************************************

Me: Stasa, what do you want to be when you grow up.
Stasa: Hmm, I want to be a princess!
Me: Well, you know, you could be anything. A doctor, a firefighter, a lawyer, a garbage collector, a mommy...
Stasa: No. I think I'll be a princess.
Me: Not a doctor or a mommy?
Stasa: A princess, mommy. I'll be a princess. Not a mommy.

Scene: 10:30 pm on a random weeknight, huge noise is heard from Stasa's room, Tom runs up to investigate.
Tom: Oh my God. OH. MY. GOD. Kari, come up here. Come up here RIGHT NOW.
Me (thinking what could she have possibly gotten in to?): What is it? Coming!

Note: I should preface this by explaining her room set-up. She's got a twin-sized captain's bed, with three rolling drawers under it. She's never messed with those drawers, mostly because she didn't even realize what they were so I've been storing some craft and party supplies in them...including a box of specialty party confetti. You see where this is going now?

I walk into an almost completely naked Stasa, sitting in the middle of her bed, covered and surrounded by party confetti. What. A. Mess. We have her sit on the floor so we can clean up. As Tom and I are cleaning, Little Miss Innocent decides to talk.
Stasa: Whatcha doin', Daddy?
Tom: I'm cleaning your mess.
Stasa: Oh, THANK YOU, Daddy. THANK YOU.

Conversations with Stasa (are they called conversations when only one person is doing all of the talking?)

Sitting in the car:
Mommy, I'm bigger now. I can go to the Redskins game. Mommy stay at Mommy's house and only Stasa will go. No. Stasa go to the game and Avery too and sometimes Lexi. We'll wear shoes and pants and a hat. Avery and Stasa. Stasa go and Avery go.

Looking at a picture of her Halloween pumpkin on my iPad:
Oh. My. God. Look at *that*.

Getting herself dressed in footed pajamas:
Mommy, mommy! These go on my arms? No. Let's think about it. These are tails? No, they're my feets.

Watching The Little Mermaid and Ursela comes on the screen:
Oh wow. She's BEAUTIFUL.

Telling me how it is:
"Mommy, listen. I wake up, I eat all my dinner. I get a freat. A candy cane freat."

Conversation with Stasa

First, her OOTD (outfit of the day):

Yep, that there is what we like to call "personal style" and she's got it in spades. Whatever that means.

Now, on to a Conversation at Bedtime.

Me: Stasa, what did you do this weekend?
Stasa, thinking: I sleep at Mimi's!
Me: That's right, you did sleep at Mimi's. What else did you do?
Stasa: I see choo-choo! I see blue choo-choo! I see black train!
Me, to Tom: Did she really see a train?
Tom: TWO trains.
Stasa: I cry at the food house.
(she did cry at Kilroy's because I left to get food from the buffet and she wanted me to stay with her)
Stasa: I cry and then up up Daddy.
Me: What?
Tom: She wasn't listening so I picked her up.
Me: Ooooh. What else did you do?
Stasa: I no listena mommy and 2 minutes. I cry in my princess dress.
(she sat in timeout in one of her princess dresses)
Me: What are you going to do tomorrow?
Stasa: Gonna go school. I hit Karma. I hit 'Leena. I no hit Marcus.
Me: We don't hit anyone, Stasa.
Stasa: NO hit.

I'm so amazed at what she's able to remember from an entire weekend of events. The kid's memory is sharp.

Conversation with Stasa in the car

Me: What did you do this morning?
Stas: I play mahkahs.
Me: Markers?
Stas: Mahkahs!
Me: Sparkles?
Stas: MAHKAHS! MAHKAHS!
Me: Marcus?
Stas: MAHKAHS OKAY!
Me: Okay. You play with mahkahs.

Words, words, and more words

Stasa's really bursting with language now-a-days and is getting really good at mimicking us and understanding how to use the new words.

please
boots (she knows the difference between boots and shoes)
Ya Ya (Yiayia)
Chee Chee (Gigi)
Gabba Gabba (for her new favorite show, Yo Gabba Gabba)
broosh (brush)
woof woof
WHOA! (usually when she's opening a package)
ball (instead of it always being baboo)

And it's not just new words, she's starting to put together little 2 and 3 word sentences; though I don't approve of all of them. I got the vacuum out the other night and she pointed to it and said "it's mommy's!" We're just eating up all of it right now. She seems much less frustrated now that she can communicate a little bit and she definitely understands much more now.

Stasa, 16 months old

The other day I started thinking about our 18 month well baby check-up that's scheduled in a couple of months and wondered what kinds of questions the doctor would ask me. I'm assuming she'll inquire about Stasa's vocabulary and comprehension so I started putting together a mental list of her spoken words and commands or questions that she understands.

Consistently spoken words (with meaning):
  • baby
  • daddy
  • mama/mommy
  • duddy (duckie)
  • doddie (doggie)
  • itty (kitty)
  • ba-boo (ball)
  • pup (up)
  • neah (yeah)
  • whereist? (where is it?)

Understood commands and questions:
  • Did you poop?
  • Give mama/daddy/baby/whomever a kiss.
  • Give mama/daddy/whomever a hug.
  • Where's your bear?
  • Let's feed the baby.
  • Bring mama your baby.
  • Are you hungry?
  • Do you want some milk?
  • Where's the kitty?
  • Sit down.
  • No. (She definitely understands, but doesn't like it.)
  • Bring me the ___.
  • Get the ball.
  • Yay! (clapping)
  • How big is Stasa?
  • Where's your nose?
  • Where's the baby in the belly? Where's your belly?
  • Say night night. Let's go night night.
  • Bye bye (waves bye)

Random cute things she's doing nowadays:
  • Patting our backs when she hugs us
  • HUGS! for us, her baby, the cat, random kids, hand puppets...
  • Says "ooOOooOoo" when putting on her play necklaces
  • Tries to put her socks and shoes on, but only succeeds in placing them on top of her feet
  • "Reads" her books and our magazines
  • Places her cup on the dinner table when she's finished with it (mostly)
  • Neatly dips her french fries and chicken nuggets in ketchup
  • Spoon feeds herself yogurt and other soft foods

I'm sure there are other words, commands and cute things she's saying and doing that I've neglected, so I'll add to the list as I remember them. For now I think she's right on track with her development. Tom and I both can't wait until she starts speaking English and not Stasish, but then again, we'll probably be saying "remember when she was nice and quiet?" after a week of her chattering.
